Self Guided
We do recommend you do consistent training before you come, climbing stairs and incline changes of any degree will be beneficial in getting your legs and lungs in condition for the uphill and downhill walking in varying elevations. Naturally if you wish to take it very easy, there are numerous cable cars etc. to sweep you up the mountains and down again! You will be met at the hotel by an European Walking Tours representative and will receive an information kit including walking map. You will have local assistance throughout your stay.

What about the terrain? From easy paths through meadows and woods on gravel to undulating dirt trails in hilly or mountainous areas with small rocks and roots. Most of the trails are well marked and maintained, maybe “uneven” and up and down.

We recommend sturdy and well broken in walking boots and walking poles. You will be asked only to bring a small day pack to carry water and personal necessities.

European Walking Tours' guided walks are tailored to the capability of the clients.

Groups
For the most enjoyable and rewarding experience, we ask that you use your best judgment to make selections in keeping with your health, physical condition, and individual circumstances.

Which level do you believe you and your group would prefer?

Level 1
Low level walks of 2–4 miles 2-4 hours per day. Frequent stops on well-marked trails and/or roads with gentle undulating terrain and few ascents and descents, through valleys and around lakes and rivers.

Level 2
Walking/hiking 4–7 miles, approximately 4-5 hours per day. Walks/hikes will be on mountain trails up and downhill over mixed terrain with ascents and descents.

Level 3
Hiking 3-8 miles, approximately 4 - 6 hours per day. The hikes take place on steeper and higher elevation with longer ascents/descents on very uneven, occasionally narrow trails with small rocks.

Can I do a walking tour?
EWT walking programs are for people in good physical condition. But what exactly does that mean? Well, to begin with, if you have never taken a walking tour, don’t expect a day with EWT to be quite like any organized tour you have ever taken. You will enjoy the scenery more during the walks if you engage in moderate exercise prior to departing home. If your present lifestyle does not include regular exercise and distance walking, with elevation changes of 3000 feet or more, we urge you to consult your physician about a program at least three months prior to departure which allows you to fully enjoy this program without undue strain. Everyone is expected to keep up with the group while walking or hiking, or to take a day off if you feel like it.
Most of our programs take place on mountainous terrain, occasionally with 1200 feet gains and losses. There are possibilities to take local transportation should the hike be too demanding.

Please note: when you begin your regimen of training, take several miles walks each week which include changes in elevation, and work your way up to an occasional 6 mile. walk. Climbing stairs and incline changes of any degree will be beneficial in getting your legs and lungs in condition for the uphill and downhill walking in the varying elevations. Please be sure to wear the boots you plan to wear during the program.
